Irene Petronella Neshite 1932-2026

Together again

YOUNGSTOWN — Irene Petronella Neshite, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Irene was born June 19, 1932, in Campbell, a daughter of Stephen and Mary Merva Bires.

She was a 1950 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School.

Irene married the love of her life, Stephen J. Neshite, on June 19, 1954; they shared 45 years of marriage until his passing on Oct. 8, 1999.

Irene started her career as a teller at Dollar Savings and Trust. She later retired from First Federal Bank as a bookkeeper. She also worked as a bookkeeper at Burkland Florist.

Irene was of the Catholic faith and was devoted to the Blessed Mother, having prayed the Rosary every morning. She was a parishioner of the former St. Matthias Church and was a member of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild and the former St. Matthias Senior Citizens Club. She was also a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.

Irene loved being around people. She will be remembered for her vibrant smile and embracing and sharing her Slovak traditions. She enjoyed her trips to the casinos and traveling, especially family vacations to the beach. Irene was an avid reader, having read several books a week. She enjoyed knitting, dancing and listening to music, especially polkas. She had a green thumb with houseplants.

Irene will be deeply missed and always remembered by her children, Diane Gondor of Struthers, Darlene Sova of Youngstown, Dona (Bill) Malloy of Petersburg and Thomas (Lisa) Neshite of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, David DiVencenzo, Nicole Flores, Natale Neshite, Kayla Russ, Mandy Turczany, and Alec and Aidan Neshite; nine great-grandchildren; and her furry granddog, Fiona; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Stephen Richard Neshite; three great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, Steve Gondor and John Sova; daughter-in-law, Denise Neshite; sister, Rita Wolfgang; brother-in-law, Gene Wolfgang; and a great-nephew.

Calling hours will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the Wasko Funeral Home, Campbell, with a prayer service at 11a.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish (formerly St. John Catholic Church), 159 Reed Ave., Campbell, OH 44405.

Irene will be laid to rest next to her husband in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown.

The Neshite family has entrusted Irene’s care to the Wasko Funeral Home, 216 Coitsville Road, Campbell, OH 44405.

In lieu of flowers, Irene’s family requests monetary donations be sent to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
