BOARDMAN — William S. “Bill” Candella, 76, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday morning, Jan. 6, 2026. Bill was best known for his kind heart, wonderful sense of humor and his gift for storytelling — often sharing tales from his life’s many adventures.
He was born May 23, 1949, in Youngstown, the son of William and Dolores Skolada Candella, and was a lifelong area resident.
Bill was a 1967 graduate of Campbell High School.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of airman first class. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, and he received an honorable discharge on Oct. 26, 1970.
Bill retired from Ameritech, formerly Ohio Bell, after 40 years of dedicated service. Following retirement, he pursued his entrepreneurial passion by founding Candella Micro Distillery in 2015, which he owned and operated for more than 10 years.
Bill was a graduate of the American Distilling Institute and earned the title of master distiller. His spirits received numerous awards and accolades, and his work was featured in many news and magazine articles.
Bill’s generosity was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he donated hand sanitizer to hospitals and first responders. In addition to distilling, Bill had a lifelong passion for flying. He owned and operated a charter business for many years and was also a talented photographer.
