William ‘John’ Janacone 1933-2026
YOUNGSTOWN — William “John” Janacone, 92, passed away Friday evening, Jan. 23, 2026, at Masternick Memorial nursing home in New Middletown.
He was born in New Castle, Pa., on Oct. 27, 1933, to Benjamin and Mary Ferrazzano Janacone Sr.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia F. Criscione-Janacone, of 21 years; five brothers, Samuel, Angelo, Richard, James and Benjamin; and one sister, Margaret.
John is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and longtime caretakers Patty and Michael.
John was a graduate of Youngstown State University and worked as an engineer / fireman for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
He was an avid gardener who won many awards for his prized garlic varieties. He also had a deep knowledge and love of flowers that adorned the front of his home every spring, summer and fall. Another one of John’s favorite pastimes was riding his ATVs in the Allegheny Mountains with family and friends. He also held a lifetime membership at the Mahoning Sportsman’s Association in Bessemer, Pa.
John was a member of St. Anthony Church in Youngstown and donated many years to baking pizzas for various church activities.
He will be sadly missed by his lifelong friends, including Richard “Birdie” Shaffer, Dave Patton Jr., Bob Gardner and his extended family, and Marilou Sabo and her daughters, Debbie and Sheri. Everyone who knew John will certainly miss him saying, “Well … what’s your MO”? (short for modus operandi) or “What’s the Scoop?” each time we got together or talked on the phone.
Calling hours will be 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at Schiavone Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, officiated by Monsignor John Zuraw.
