Richard A. Ulrich 1939-2025
AUSTINTOWN — Richard Arthur Ulrich, 86, was born Aug. 27, 1939, in Youngstown, and passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 26, 2025.
A 1957 graduate of Chaney High School, Richard was the son of Arthur Ulrich and Patricia Hogan. He earned his bachelor’s degree in art education from Youngstown State University, a master’s degree in fine art from Kent State University and pursued doctoral studies at Queens College and Case Western Reserve University. He served as a professor of art history at Kent State University and Youngstown State University, retiring as professor emeritus in 1996.
Richard was the author of “Early History of Canfield (1776-1876)” and was actively involved with the Canfield Historical Society. His dedication to preservation led to several local landmarks, including the Idora Park carousel, being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. A plaque featuring his artwork remains on the Green in Canfield. An artist, historian and man of faith, Richard loved painting local landmarks, collecting trains, antiques and spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Dorothy Elder and Margaret Farcas. He is survived by his children, Dana (Dave) Cornelius of Pittsburgh and Bic (Christy) Ulrich of Fayetteville, W.Va.; grandchildren, Drew Cornelius and Evan Ulrich; sisters, Pat Fisher of Kingwood, Texas, and Marilyn (Joe) Glass of Dayton; and stepdaughters, Ladonna (Frank) DeCaterina, Jilene R. (Jeffrey J.) Beadle and Melissa A. (Trevor G.) Berry.
Richard’s life was deeply rooted in his faith. In his final days, he shared, “The Lord gave me a long and wonderful life filled with many blessings. I have no regrets, and I’m ready for a beautiful life in Heaven.” Friends may call 1 to 3:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, Lane Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel, followed by funeral services at 4 p.m.
