Nicholas Lavanty 1942-2026
AUSTINTOWN — Nicholas “Nick” Lavanty, 83, a beloved husband, father and cornerstone of Youngstown’s Italian restaurant community, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
He was born Aug. 12, 1942, in Youngstown, a son of the late John and Angeline D’Amato Lavanty.
Nick was a well-known and respected figure in Youngstown’s rich culinary history and never met a stranger. He was the originator of Lavanty’s Pizza and later Nicolinni’s, establishments that became synonymous with the city’s cherished Brier Hill-style pizza. His passion for food, family and community helped shape a legacy that continues today through two Nicolinni’s locations lovingly carried on by his family.
Nick married Patricia at a young age, and together they embodied the true spirit of partnership and perseverance. In the 1960s, they began their entrepreneurial journey by selling pizza out of their apartment, pouring hard work and heart into every pie. In the 1970s, that dream grew into a full restaurant, marking the beginning of a lasting presence in Youngstown’s dining scene. Along the way, Nick and Patricia raised five children, building not just a business but a family rooted in tradition and resilience.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Linda, his fiancee, for her care, compassion and dedication to Nick. We also deeply appreciate the patience, kindness and understanding shown to our family as we take time to process our grief.
Nick Lavanty’s legacy lives on in the recipes he created, the businesses he built, the community he served and the family who loved him dearly. He will be remembered for his determination and the unmistakable mark he left on Youngstown.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his fiancee, Linda Nims; his children, Tammy (Vince) Wukmir, John Lavanty, Patrick (Stephanie) Lavanty and Ashley Lavanty; grandchildren, Leo and Elouise Wurmir, and Nicholas and Giada Lavanty; his sister, Sally Grabovak; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia (Telshaw) Lavanty; son, Nicholas Lavanty Jr.; sister, Esther Lavanty; and brothers, Sam and John Lavanty.
A celebration of Nick’s life will be held at a future date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Davis-Becker Funeral Home in Boardman. Please visit www.beckerobits.com to send the family condolences and share your memories.
