Louis W. Mason Sr. 1934-2026
NILES — Louis W. Mason Sr., 91, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, at his home with his family at his side.
He was born Nov. 18, 1934, in Waynesburg, Pa., the son of Jesse L. and Josephine G. Inghram Mason.
After moving to Ohio, he worked at U.S. Steel in McDonald for 27 years until their closing, then went on to work with his son-in-law, Bill, for the next 17 years, doing roofing, siding, doors, windows, plumbing, etc., and retired in 1998. While working at U.S. Steel he would repair lawnmowers in his spare time.
In his retirement, he enjoyed flea markets, going to the mall and on occasion some fishing. He also liked to collect musical instruments and play his guitar and sing. He always maintained a small garden in addition to a rhubarb patch that he had for well over 50 years.
Louis married Charlotte V. Bell on Dec. 24, 1957.
He served in the United States Army. He enlisted July 15, 1957, trained in Fort Hood, Texas, and then spent the remainder of his time in Germany, transporting supplies all over Germany, and was honorably discharged June 19, 1959.
He is survived by three daughters, Sherry (Bill) Strohmeyer of Niles, Sonia K. Mason of Niles and Sally (Gamal) Nagi of West Chester; four grandchildren, Patrick Strohmeyer of Niles, Tabitha (Steve) Kasin of West Chester, Ginger (Bert) Patterson of Niles and Chad Strohmeyer of Girard; and 12 great-grandchildren, Jade, Sage, Gennah, Alisha, Findlay, Decklyn, Emily, Elle, Sebastian, Kendall, Brynlee and Carter. He is also survived by two brothers, Arlan “Pete” (Arlene) Mason of Warren and Gene (Charlene) Mason of Austintown.
Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte V. “Bell” Mason, who died May 27, 1998; son, Louis W. “Buck” Mason; granddaughter, Stephanie “Diggy” Mason Lattanzio; four brothers, Melvin, Albert, Lloyd and Jesse; and two sisters, Evadean and Janice.
A funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where family and friends may call 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prior to the service.
Burial will be in Kerr Cemetery.
