James F. Carney 1941-2026
POWELL — James Francis Carney, 84, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026.
He was born Oct. 10, 1941, in Youngstown, the son of Michael and Marion Tyndall Carney.
One of eight children, he was raised with strong faith and family values that guided him throughout his life.
Jim was a graduate of Ursuline High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Youngstown State University.
On June 27, 1964, he married Marlene Fossesca, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.
Jim built a respected career as an accountant with the Edward J. DeBartolo and Gallagher-Pipino Corporations.
A dedicated mentor, he coached Little League, Pony League and Class B baseball for 40 years as well as youth basketball.
He was especially proud to coach the 1987 Ohio State Little League Championship Team.
Jim was a faithful and active member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where he served as a catechism teacher, Eucharistic minister and adult altar server.
His Catholic faith was central to his life and was reflected in his quiet service to others.
He was preceded in death by his son, James “Jim” Carney Jr.; his parents; and his siblings, Helene Bartholemew, Bill Carney, Kieran Sullivan Canacci and Barbara Mathews.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marlene; his children, Bernadette Torretta (Gino), Kristin Carney Bueno and John (Julie) Carney; daughter-in-law, Lisa (Andrews) Carney; three granddaughters, Alexandra Bueno, Aria Torretta and Madeline Carney; and siblings, Maureen O’Connor, Peggy McVicker and Tim Carney.
A Mass of Christian Burial and services will be held at a later date in Youngstown.
