Glenn Edwin Gotthardt 1929-2025
BERLIN CENTER — Glenn Edwin Gotthardt, born Sept. 22, 1929, in Darlington, Pa., to Lester and Clara Gotthardt, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, Dec. 26, 2025, at his home.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Gotthardt; his brother, Ernie Gotthardt; and his sister, Elaine Farley.
Glenn is survived by his sisters, Joann Dillan and Betty Megown; five children, Jeffrey A. Gotthardt (Angela), Catherine Sheptock, Glenn A. Gotthardt, Beth Reese (Dale) and Amy Beck (Greg); nine grandchildren, Koree, Alexxa, Logan, Garren, Bianca, Amber, Ryley, Mitchell and Thomas; and eight loving great-grandchildren.
Glenn led a deeply interesting, fulfilling and successful life. Soon after returning from an Army assignment in Germany, he met his beautiful wife, Jackie, at a dance club in Midland, Pa.; the two were married just six months later, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned a lifetime.
Glenn began his career as a brickyard laborer in Darlington, Pa., but he had greater aspirations. While working full time and raising a young family, he attended night school at Youngstown State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Shortly thereafter, he joined the accounting firm of Packer, Deislinger and Johnson in Warren.
That opportunity eventually led him to one of his firm’s clients, Niles Expanded Metals, which offered Glenn a vice president and controller position — marking the beginning of a long and successful career in metals-related manufacturing. Taking a true leap of faith, Glenn later co-founded a steel service center, Hamp Steel, while raising five young children at home.
Hamp Steel soon merged with Superior Slitting, and the combined company became Select Steel Inc. Glenn went on to form Select Industries in New Castle, Pa., and acquired a metal lithography facility in Greenville, Pa., which became Select Metal Litho. Select Development, a real estate venture, was also added to the portfolio during his tenure. Glenn remained professionally active well into his 90s.
Glenn was an exceptional entrepreneur and a brilliant accountant who greatly enjoyed mentoring business associates and family members alike. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was truly the life of the party — known for his infectious laugh, sparkling blue eyes, a love of dancing and golfing, and his natural athleticism. He seemed to win at just about everything he tried and regaled his family with stories of his full, beautiful life right until the end.
Above all, Glenn was a beloved brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who dearly loved his family and friends. He represented a unique generation of hardworking, fun-loving, curious and engaged individuals — all values he passed onto his deeply grateful family. Glenn will be missed and remembered by many.
Rest in peace, GEG.
