Edward G. Schanz 1937-2026

AUSTINTOWN — Edward “Eddie” G. Schanz, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, at his home.

Eddie was born Dec. 4, 1937, in Youngstown, a son of the late Gilbert K. and Mildred E. Samuels Schanz, and was a lifelong area resident.

He attended The Rayen School and worked for 29 years at Youngstown Sheet & Tube / LTV Steel Campbell Works until the mill closed. Eddie later continued his strong work ethic with V & V Appliance Parts, where he was employed for 30 years.

A man of deep faith and service, Eddie was a devoted member of St. Blaise Parish-St. Joseph Church, where he served faithfully as a Eucharistic minister and usher. He also took great pride in his role on the parish grounds crew, volunteering his time and talents for more than 50 years.

Eddie enjoyed restoring and admiring old cars, taking walks through Mill Creek Park and cheering on his favorite Cleveland sports teams — the Indians, Browns and Cavaliers. Above all, he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his family.

Eddie leaves to forever cherish his memory his beloved wife of 68 years, Joann Lucarell Schanz, whom he married Aug. 3, 1957; his son, Rick (Teresa) Schanz of Lordstown; eight grandchildren, Stephanie (Ted) Woolery, Kristopher Schanz, Ross Schanz, Courtney (Chris) Reppy, Patrick (Karli) Schanz, Michael Dowdell, Christina Dowdell and Sarah Warburton; three great-grandchildren, Eden, Zoey Grace and Ryan; his sister, Maryann Nanosky of Austintown; and many extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his son, Edward John Schanz; his sister, LuAnn Schanz; his brother, Don Schanz; and his sister-in-law, Cheryl Schanz.

Family and friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Jan. 8, 2026, at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2026, at St. Blaise Parish-St. Joseph Church, 4545 New Road, Austintown. All are welcome to attend.
