David J. Mascarella 1953-2026

LOWELLVILLE–David Joseph Mascarella, 72, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Aug. 5, 1953, in Youngstown, David was the beloved son of the late Michael and Mary Muscatell Mascarella. His life began in the Briar Hill neighborhood, where he grew up in his family home before later settling in Lowellville. David was a 1971 graduate of Rayen High School.

David was the owner and operator of Consolidated Construction with his father, Michael, while working at Operating Engineers Local 66, from which he proudly retired. A true jack of all trades, David could build anything from the ground up — his favorites were the bocce ball courts, on which he also played with several local teams.

In 2016, David became a heart transplant recipient and survivor — a testament to his strength and resilience. He was a member of the IFH in Girard, a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Society in Struthers, a parishioner of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Lowellville and a member of various ITAM clubs.

David greatly enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas several times a year, where he loved playing poker and visiting the casinos. He also enjoyed watching and betting on horse races and football and was a devoted fan of the Las Vegas Raiders and Notre Dame.

In his spare time, David could often be found attending the Italian festivals. His favorite was Italian meals, and he really enjoyed the pizza from the Avalon downtown, along with any home-cooked Italian cuisine.

To know David was to love him. He had a generous heart and a warm personality that drew people to him. His family will fondly remember his homemade chocolate pies, which he took great pride in sharing, especially with his grandchildren.

Above all else, family was the center of David’s life. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, whether on family trips, Sunday dinners or festival outings. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother and friend, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

David is survived by his children, Margaret Mascarella and David Mascarella II; his grandchildren, Sabrina (Alex) Perry, Angelina Vasi, Alivia Vasi and Louis Vasi; his sister, Margaret Cunningham of Lowellville; his brother, George Mascarella, also of Lowellville; his nieces, Devon Andrews and Ashtyn Mascarella; his nephew, Rocco Mascarella; his uncle, James Muscatell of Struthers; along with several extended family members and close friends; and his faithful four-legged companion, Beast.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Mascarella and Joseph Mascarella; his niece, Kathleena “Katie” Mascarella; and his uncle, Samuel Muscatell.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the hospice nurses and aides for the compassionate and wonderful care they provided for David. God bless you all.
