Chester L. Winebold 1951-2026
BOARDMAN — Chester L. Winebold, 74, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026, at his home with his loving family by his side.
Chester was born Sept. 8, 1951, in Oil City, Pa., the son of Chester L. Winebold Sr. and Anna Jean Cullen Winebold.
Chester graduated from The Rayen School in 1969, after which he entered the U.S. Navy and proudly served aboard the submarine USS Simon Bolivar during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in June 1973.
On June 21, 1975, Chester married the love of his life, Rayma Clement. They were childhood sweethearts since meeting at Hayes Jr. High and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 2025.
Chester joined the Youngstown Fire Department in 1978. Under Chief Charles O’Nesti, he and other rookie recruits were mandated to continue their service through the YFD strike, earning the name “Charlie’s Angels” for protecting the people of Youngstown. Chester continued to faithfully serve on the Youngstown Fire Department until his retirement in December 2006 as a captain.
Chester is survived by his wife, Rayma, along with their sons, Joshua and Jason (Lisa) Winebold, and their daughter, Leah (Adam) Altiero. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Nellie and Brady Winebold, as well as Amelia, Alora and Luciano Altiero. Chester leaves behind siblings, Diane Lipinsky, Deborah Rogers, Denise Winebold, Kevin (Helen) Winebold and Christopher (Michelle) Winebold; in addition to brother-in-law, Jason Evans; sisters-in-law, Mary (Dick) Chisholm and Alberta (Larry) Meloro; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dina Evans; nephew, Michael Lipinsky; his parents; and in-laws, Raymond and Mary Clement.
Chester was an avid golfer and never had a rainy day on the course with his buddies. His favorite golf days were spent with his daughter, Leah (whom he called “Goosey”), on her birthday. He coached his sons in youth baseball and soccer leagues, was involved in several pool leagues during retirement and was a lifelong Cleveland sports fan.
Chester loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Papa.” He looked forward to yearly vacations in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.
Everyone who knew Chester knew he was always ready to share a funny story and had a gift of making people feel special. Through his battle with cancer, his positive attitude endeared him to his doctors, nurses and many other healthcare team members. Chester was loved by all who knew him.
Chester’s family would especially like to thank the caregivers at the Hope Lodge in Cleveland, where he recovered after his bone marrow transplant. The care that he received was kind and compassionate, and meant so much to his family.
Calling hours for Chester will be 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, followed by a 5 p.m. memorial service, at the Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave., Boardman.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Hope Lodge of Cleveland or Youngstown’s Second Harvest Food Bank.
