Shirley A. Pappagallo 1946-2025
AUSTINTOWN — Shirley A. Pappagallo, 79, passed away early Wednesday morning, Dec. 17, 2025, at Hospice House, following a brief illness.
Shirley was born Aug. 29, 1946, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Dean and Olive Miller Pflugh, and was a lifelong area resident.
She was a 1962 graduate of Chaney High School and began her career with Ohio Bell, now AT&T, starting as a switchboard operator and working her way up to a supervisory position. Shirley later worked for Verizon Wireless as an account representative before retiring in 1990.
Shirley was a faithful member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Youngstown, where she was active on several church committees, including the Women’s Guild.
A very social woman, Shirley enjoyed staying involved in her community. She was a member of several organizations, including the American Business Women’s Association, Mill Creek Chapter, and the Red Hat Society, and previously served as a board member of the Lilac Lane Homeowners’ Association.
She also enjoyed bus trips to the casino and looked forward to weekly breakfasts with her former colleagues.
Shirley lived a life rooted in faith, friendship and service, and her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Shirley is survived by her sisters, Roberta Nelson of Youngstown and Susan (Jack) Ohlin of New Middletown; her brother, David Pflugh of Youngstown; her nieces, Melonie (Joel) Torres of Austintown and Melissa Zurcher of Youngstown; her nephew, Dean (Mary Beth) Zurcher of Youngstown; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Carol L. Zurcher.
Per Shirley’s request, there will be no calling hours or services.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, in Shirley’s memory.
