Sally A. Kumik 1947-2025

AUSTINTOWN — On Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, Sally A. Kumik left this life.

She was the daughter of Helen and Milton Houk and grew up on McClurg Road in Boardman, along with her older brother Phillip Houk. They all preceded her in death.

She was married to Jack “John” Kumik for 53 memorable years. Together they lived, mostly, on Lanterman Road in Austintown, where they raised their two wonderful sons, Eric and Jeffrey Kumik. Sally’s loving touch made their house a “home.”

After graduating with her bachelor’s (and later master’s) degree in special education, Sally joined the Warren City School System as a teacher, then supervisor of special education, next an assistant principal at West Middle School, then principal at Horace Mann, and retired as principal at Roosevelt. She was known as “Mrs. K” by all the kids, and she loved them all.

Beyond retirement, she became a part-time supervisor of student teachers at YSU.

Sally liked being involved and was always ready to jump in and help or chair a committee at Zion Lutheran Church, the Warren Ski Club or as a board member of the Austintown Fitch Band Parents.

Sally enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, hiking the national parks, kayaking and bicycling over thousands of miles in seven states and Croatia! In her younger years, she also did a lot of snow and water skiing, as well as whitewater rafting and scuba diving. She was an amazing woman!

She was a picture of health until Sept. 5, 2024, when she began a battle, anguishing at times, with a rare type of leukemia.

Sally will be remembered as having an electric personality that would light up a room and be the life of a party, as well as being a loving mother and terrific wife.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511, with calling hours 9 to 11 a.m.

A luncheon at the church will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley.
