Msgr. Alexis E. Mihalik 1937-2025

CANFIELD — Monsignor Alexis Mihalik passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, surrounded by his family.

The extraordinary life of the Reverend Monsignor Alexis Mihalik began Dec. 8, 1937 in Hagerstown, Maryland, born to Andrew and Agnes Mihalik.

After moving to the Youngstown area, he graduated from Ursuline High School. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. He then received a Master of Arts degree in theological studies from Fordham University in New York.

He was ordained to the priesthood, April 23, 1964, in St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Youngstown. Monsignor served as pastor in churches throughout Pennsylvania, from his ordination until 1974, where he then served as prefect and professor at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary.

He then relocated closer to his family becoming the pastor at St. Nicholas Byzantine Church in Youngstown. In June 1982, Msgr. Mihalik was assigned to serve as the pastor of St. John the Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The year 1990 was remarkable for Monsignor and his family, as he was assigned to his final location, back in Youngstown, at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church. It was there he presided over his nieces’ weddings and baptized many great-nephews and great-nieces.

Under his guidance, the church was remodeled, bringing conformity with the liturgical prescriptions of the Byzantine Church. Msgr. Mihalik’s architectural gift and timeless style, along with his love of God and the Byzantine faith, left an enduring mark on the church he retired from in 2007.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Mihalik; brother-in-law, Milan Krivan; and nephew, John Mihalik.

He leaves behind his sister, Rosalie Krivan; brother, Allan (Patricia) Mihalik; nieces, Diane Mihalik, Kristina (Michael) Nanosky, Laura (Robert) Stoy and Stephanie (David) Patrick; and nephew, Andrew (Nikki) Mihalik. He leaves to cherish his memory, his great-nieces and great-nephews, Aidan, Alina, Michael, Nicholas, Jacob, Robert, Alexia, Katrina, Annaka, Milana, Sabrina and Emily.

The Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025, at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church, 7754 Boardman, OH 44512. Family and friends may pay their respects beforehand, from 9 to 11 a.m., also at the church.
