Herbert R. McMullen 1936-2025
POLAND — Herbert R. McMullen, 89, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 19, 2025, at the Inn at Poland Way.
Herbert was born April 7, 1936, in Youngstown, the son of Eugene and Margaret Mary Refi McMullen.
He was a graduate of Boardman High School and attended Youngstown State University and The Ohio State University. He also served in the U.S. Army.
On May 2, 1959, he married the love of his life, Barbara. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage until her passing on Feb. 19, 2016.
He was employed by US Steel and National Gypsum, where he retired in 1995 after 33 years.
Herbert was a longtime member of St. Joseph Church in Austintown. He was also an OHSAA Track Official for 20 years.
His passion was golf and he was a 25-year trustee for the YMCA Golf League at Mill Creek. He was an avid fan of all Cleveland sports teams, Youngstown State and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
He and his wife Barbara loved spending their winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, after their retirement, where he achieved his prized hole in one. There he was a condo association president for over 17 years. Although golf was his passion, his greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren.
Herbert will be greatly missed by his children, Dr. Timothy (Susan) McMullen of Columbus, Debra (Gary) DiTullio of Canfield and Kelli (Jason) Bush of Venice, Florida; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Talbot, Kevin (Jacquelyn) McMullen, Gary (Brittany) DiTullio and Mark (Madison) DiTullio; great-grandchildren, Liam and Benjamin Talbot, and Giuliana and Gabriella DiTullio. sister-in-law, Dolores Baritell of Niles and brother-in-law, Michael (Deb) Benedictus of Tallmadge; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, Herbert was preceded in death by his sister, Gloria (Paul) Rutecki.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Solanki and the nurses and staff at the Inn at Poland Way, especially Sandy, with whom he had a special bond, where he was affectionately known as “Mac” for their kind and compassionate care they showed to him.
Family and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025 at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave., Boardman followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Austintown.
