Helene J. Scardina 1926-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Helene J. Scardina passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 26, 2025, at her home with her family by her side.

Helene was born Dec. 12, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of Frank and Sophie Paulishin Buttry.

She was a lifelong Youngstown resident and graduated from The Rayen School in 1944.

After graduating, Helene worked as a bookkeeper at McKelvey’s Department Store. She was a dedicated associate for 12 years until she married the love of her life, John R. Scardina, in 1954, and became a mother of two daughters.

Helene loved to volunteer in the cafeteria at St. Dominic School, where her daughters attended. In addition, she worked as an election official for the Mahoning County Board of Elections.

In her role as a homemaker, Helene enjoyed baking and cooking, but she really loved shopping and socializing with her friends and family, with whom she had many.

Helene was a longtime parishioner of St. Dominic Church.

Left on Earth to honor Helene are her two daughters, Karen Dlwgosh and Sharon (Dana) Jones; four grandchildren, Dawn (Travis) Carney, Keith (Nicole) Dlwgosh, Kristen (Shaun) Oles and Dawson Jones; and five great-grandchildren, Ethan and Mason Carney, Jonathan, Lucas and Nolan Oles.

Besides her parents, Helene was preceded in death by her husband, John; her brother, Albert; her sisters, Betty and Phyllis; and her son-in-law, Keith Dlwgosh Sr.

Friends will be received from 8:30 am to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, at the Rossi Brothers and Lellio Funeral Home, 4442 South Ave., Boardman, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Dominic Church, 77 East Lucius Ave., Youngstown.

Helene will be laid to rest in Lake Park Cemetery, alongside her beloved husband, John.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions be made in Helene’s name to St. Dominic Church.
