George N. Callihan 1930-2025
GIRARD — George N. Callihan, 95, passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025, at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House, Poland.
He was born Nov. 1, 1930, in Warren, the son of Newton James and Flora Morgan Callihan.
George was employed for 30 years at the City of Niles Water Department, retiring in 1981.
He attended St. Pope John XXIII Parish-Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Niles. He served as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Army in Korea.
A devoted family man, George enthusiastically attended sporting events, recitals, school programs and activities whenever his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were involved.
Through his journey of 95 years, he overcame many obstacles with indomitable spirit and persistence. He touched many lives and will be remembered for his generosity, infectious sense of humor, unwavering example of hard work and perseverance and his extraordinary dedication to his family. He was always ready and willing to help whenever needed.
He enjoyed working outside, boating, playing cards, water skiing, fishing, county fairs, auctions, harness racing, family picnics and car ride adventures. A family summer home on Lake Erie brought enjoyment for many seasons, with endless sunsets and beach fires.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Alvina Spalvieri Callihan, whom he married Feb. 3, 1951; a son, James Callihan and his wife, Judy, of Liberty; three daughters, Mary Jean Mackey and her husband, Robert, of Delray Beach, Florida, Nancy Starkey and her husband, Franklin, of Girard and Cindy Lou Murray of Poland; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He is survived by a brother, Tim Ceroli, and sisters, Patricia Ceroli Pugh, Delores Wiles and Dorothy Myers.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Michael Callihan, Terry Callihan and Joseph Ceroli, and a sister, Beth Chilton.
Friends may call 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025, at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home, Niles.
Burial will be in Pineview Memorial Cemetery, where George will be honored for his military service by VFW 9571 Ellsworth Honor Guard.
