Duke Katterheinrich 1939-2025
BERLIN CENTER — D. L. “Duke” Katterheinrich, 86, of Berlin Center, passed away Thursday afternoon, Dec. 4, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Duke was a 1957 graduate of New Knoxville High School, and worked as the owner operator of Dutch Harbor Marina on Berlin Reservoir for the past 51 years.
He married the former Ellen R. Platfoot on March 10,1962, in Hawaii. Together, they shared 62 years of marriage and many happy memories. She preceded him in death on July 25, 2024.
Duke was a member of the Berlin Center United Methodist Church and a longtime member of the Berlin Lake Golf Club.
He enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical and loved participating in theater productions and was active in the church choir.
He was a great man who loved his family and friends fiercely. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was an integral part of their lives, offering them many life lessons. He was always there to offer anyone a helping hand, an ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry on. He was the “visitor” of the family and always enjoyed taking time to go and see family and friends, no matter where they lived. He was active and on the run till the very end. He was a kind, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his two daughters, LuAnn (Kenneth) Kimker of Waltham, Massachusetts and Jennifer (Christopher) Kirk of North Benton; six beloved grandchildren, Hannah (Matt) Burke, Alexa (Kolby) Sprague, and Benjamin (Celia), Alexander (Paige), Caleb (Lauren) and Camille Kirk; three great-grandchildren, Lola and Legacy Kirk, and Karson Sprague; a sister, Peggy (Thomas) Lammers; a brother-in-law, William Van Keuren; and two sisters-in-law, Barbara and Rita Platfoot.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Mitchell Katterheinrich; brother, Joe Katteheinrich; a sister, Nancy Van Kueren; and two granddaughters, Cecelia and Christina Kirk.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Berlin Center United Methodist Church, 15611 W. Akron-Canfield Road, Berlin Center, OH 44401, with Pastor Fred Higgins officiating.
Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad St., Canfield.
He will be laid to rest next to his wife in Glen Cemetery, Port Jefferson. There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.
