Barbara A. Powers 1937-2025

Barbara A. Powers

SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. — Barbara A. Powers, 88, passed away peacefully, Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, at her home on Sanibel Island.

She was born April 20, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, to Gregory and Anne Ross, and was later joined by her brother, Robert Ross.

Barbara earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University Chicago. Following her graduation, she became a stewardess for Trans World Airlines (TWA) and traveled extensively.

She later became an elementary school teacher, a profession she deeply cherished and to which she devoted her heart and energy.

Barbara married Paul J. Powers, an officer in the United States Navy. Together they raised three children, Briana, Gregory and Jeffrey. Their family life included years spent overseas, followed by time in Detroit, Youngstown, Virginia and Florida.

Nothing brought Barbara greater joy than time spent with family and friends. She and Paul delighted in annual summer vacations, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and happiness.

Barbara especially enjoyed teaching her grandchildren about investing and the stock market — subjects she followed closely and discussed often. She was a strong and joyful matriarch whose warmth, generosity and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include Briana Bayer (Thomas) and their children, Andrew, Maris and Merrill; Gregory Powers (Carla) and their children, Peyton and Sylvia; and Jeffrey Powers (Veronica) and their children, John and Ryan.

She was affectionately known to her grandchildren as “MomMom” and “Me Mom.”

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A private family ceremony will be held.
