Richard L. Cretella 1944–2025

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Richard Lee Cretella, 81, formerly of Canfield, passed away

peacefully, Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025, with his son by his side.

Born June 5, 1944, in Youngstown, Richard was the son of the late Joseph Cretella

and Annabelle Faustino Cretella.

He was a proud graduate of Girard High School, Class of 1962.

Richard married the love of his life, Jean Mohn Cretella, on May 27, 1967. They shared 25

wonderful years together until her passing on Jan. 6, 1993.

He is survived by his loving children, Julie (David) Cooper and Jim (Jenny Bender) Cretella. Richard was the cherished grandfather of Nathan and Ellie Cretella, Colin (Torey) Cooper, Clay Cooper, Jenna Cooper and Guy Cooper; and the great-grandfather of Maren and Lila Cooper. He is also survived by his siblings, Col. (Ret.) Joseph Cretella and Janet Mattson.

He was preceded in death by his brother, David Cretella.

Richard worked as a locomotive engineer for 40 years, retiring from Norfolk Southern Railroad in July 2006 with a spotless safety record. A man of integrity and dedication, he took great pride in his career and the friendships he built along the way.

A longtime resident of Canfield, Richard was a member of St. Michael Parish.

In retirement, he enjoyed sharing a beer with his neighbor, Kim Sopp, golfing with friends, Tom Walker and Bob Loveland, spending winters on the beaches and golf courses of Naples, Florida, and traveling the world with his beloved companion, Yvonne Bender. He cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren, especially on beach days and at holiday gatherings. He also found great joy in coffee and donuts after church and in sharing Italian meals with his sister, Janet, whom he adored.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, at St. Michael Parish in Canfield. He was laid to rest next to his wife in Resurrection Cemetery, Youngstown.

Richard will be remembered for his kindness, humor and unwavering love for his family

and friends. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
