Patrick M. Chrystal 1952-2025
YOUNGSTOWN — Patrick M. Chrystal, a beloved member of the Youngstown community, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his family.
Born December 24, 1952, in Youngstown, Pat lived a life filled with passion and dedication, marked by his enduring love for his family and friends.
A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in 1971, Pat went on to carve a successful career for himself and retired from TimeKap.
Pat loved cooking. He created Paddy McPepper and Pete’s-A-Place food concession trailers. Along with his brother, Pete, he served his Hungarian stuffed hot pepper sandwiches (his son Patrick’s recipe) and wood-fired specialty pizzas at Shaker Woods and Christmas in the Woods, as well as at various Irish festivals. No one loved being around people more than Pat.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Patrick was a true jack-of-all-trades who found immense joy in creating things. Among his notable projects was the creation of an Irish pub in the basement of his home, affectionately known as Chrystal’s. This space became a cherished gathering spot, reflecting his love for community and camaraderie. He also built tables using various media.
Pat’s interests extended into horticulture, where he earned recognition as a master gardener and a volunteer. He was honored with the Youngstown Cityscape Award for his remarkable gardening achievements. He was also a licensed charter captain and received Brewer’s Certificates, underlining his diverse talents and pursuits. In 2010, he was proudly named Irishman of the Year, a testament to his strong ties to his heritage and community.
He was actively involved with the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, further demonstrating his commitment to service and community involvement. His warm personality and love for life endeared him to many, as he embraced very opportunity to connect with people.
Patrick is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sandy McGarry Chrystal; his daughter, Shawn M. Chrystal, and her husband, Mark Griffith; his grandson, Keighan Griffith; his granddaughter, Mackenzie Chrystal Grant; and his sisters, Elizabeth and Susan Chrystal. He is also survived by his brothers, J. Robert (Barbara) Chrystal, and Pete and Jeff (Nora) Chrystal; sisters-in-law, Donna Depp and Patty Crago (Kenny); and brother-in-law, Bill McGarry (Joy); along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Robert and Ann (Hyland) Chrystal; his son, Patrick Chrystal; his granddaughter, Ryleigh Griffith; his sister, Peggy Chrystal; and his brothers, Martin and William Chrystal.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown, OH 44507.
Pat will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, unwavering love for family and his contributions to the community. It has been said “no one loved life more than Pat!” His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
