John Schmidt 1930-2025
BOARDMAN — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Schmidt, 94, of Boardman. He was affectionately known as “Opa” (German for grandpa).
John was born Nov. 27, 1930, in NovoSelo, Yugoslavia, to Anna and Ferdinand Schmidt. John immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1956, along with his mother, Anna, and sister, JoAnn.
John was employed as an auto mechanic from 1956 to 1973, then from 1973 to 1994 he was employed by General Motors, Lordstown, where he worked in the skilled trades department. He retired Jan. 1, 1995, from GM.
He married the love of his life, Agnes Ference, in 1957, and raised two children, John Schmidt and Susan Schmidt Brink.
John loved dogs, especially his two beloved German shepherds, Dino and Rusty. He and his wife traveled extensively during retirement, including Germany, Las Vegas and Atlantic City. John and Agnes also loved going to Mountaineer a few times per month and playing the slot machines.
His hobbies included traveling, reading and working on home projects.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Anna; sister, JoAnn; and wife, Agnes.
John is survived by his son, John; daughter, Susan; daughter-in-law, Roslyn Schmidt; son-in-law, Rich Brink; granddaughters, Alexa Schmidt and Stephanie Brink (Ryan) Moon; niece, MaryAnn Malawista; and nephew, Andy De Danaan.
Private services were held for the family.
