James E. Buist 1938-2025
COLUMBIANA — James E. Buist, 87, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
James was born June 15, 1938, in Youngstown, the son of Emmett and Pelagia Kondzielski Buist.
A 1957 graduate of Ursuline High School, James dedicated himself to his career, serving as a machine shop supervisor for Wean United for 30 years. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were hallmarks of his professional life.
Beyond his career, James was a veteran of the United States Air Force, where he proudly served during the Korean War and was stationed in northern Africa.
James had a zest for life that extended into his personal interests. He enjoyed bowling and golfing, filling his leisure moments with sports that brought him joy. A lifelong fan of Cleveland sports, he delighted in each game. However, his greatest love was always his family. He cherished the time he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, finding immense pride in their accomplishments.
He took great pride in his home, often found tinkering with projects around the house, ensuring it was a welcoming space for his loved ones.
He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Janet Fennell, whom he married Oct. 22, 1983. James leaves behind his children, Karen (David) Kiger of Boardman, Deborah (Kenneth) Martin of Columbiana, Kimberly (James) Ward of Las Vegas, Jim (Dana) Buist of Canfield, Kenny (Rosa) Krecken of Boardman and Kathy (Kurt) Scheetz of Southport, North Carolina. In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.
James was preceded in death by his parents and by his son, Michael Buist.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2025, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, 2726 Center Road, Youngstown, OH 44514. A second visitation will take place 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, 2025, at St. Patrick Church, 1410 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown, OH 44507, followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m.
