Sofia E. Kale 2015-2025
NEW WATERFORD — Sofia “Sia” Eileen Kale, 10, left this world on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, following her valiant fight with leukodystrophy. Sofia was at peace, in her home, embraced by her loving family, when she passed away.
Sia was born July 20, 2015, in Boardman, the daughter of Rodney and Stephanie Ellsworth Kale.
Sofia was fortunate enough to be able to live a typical life, full of running, playing, laughter and singing alongside her family and friends, until she was diagnosed with leukodystrophy, a progressive neurological disease, in 2020, when she was 5 years old.
Sofia adored all that is Disney and princesses, singing along to every song, given the opportunity. A highlight of her life was being able to visit Disney World not once, but twice.
She loved being around animals in any capacity, spending copious amounts of time visiting zoos, aquariums or even in the woods with mom and dad.
Sofia also had a zest for adventure, and once she acquired her wheelchair, she would choose the rough, bumpy path over the smooth paved one every time, and affirm the decision with her infamous giggles.
Despite the challenges of her disease, Sofia was able to attend Crestview Elementary School thanks to their accommodating spirit. Though Sofia faced continuous setbacks due to her disease, through the love of her family, friends and community, she lived a life of inclusion and happiness. Even in the face of adversity, Sofia never lost her jovial spirit. With her pure heart, infectious giggle and beautiful smile, to know Sofia was to love her: she was truly Known and Loved.
Though her time on earth was brief, Sofia’s impact was profound. Through this heartbreaking journey, Sofia’s loving spirit touched many lives, bringing awareness and rekindling an often-lost sense of community.
Sia is survived by her parents, Stephanie and Rodney Kale Jr. of New Waterford; her sister, Addilyn Kale; her brother, Everett Kale; her grandmother, Eileen Ellsworth of Youngstown; grandparents, Kimberly and Rodney Kale Sr. of Lisbon; her uncle, Steve (April) Baker; her uncle, Joe Baker; her aunt, Devon Kale; and many loving cousins and extended family.
A celebration of life will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, at The Barn Above the Lakes in Leetonia.
