Shirley S. Mitchell 1928-2025
POLAND — Shirley S. Mitchell, 97, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 11, 2025, at The Inn at Poland Way.
Born Aug. 6, 1928, in Sharon, Pa., a daughter of Meyer and Edna Eastlick Schwartz, Shirley lived in Farrell, Pa., and eventually moved to New Castle, Pa., where she spent her youth.
A cancer survivor, Shirley started college at age 37, at what is now Youngstown State University, where she earned an education degree with a focus in teaching, as well as, a master’s degree in guidance and counseling, all while teaching in the Boardman Schools. Shirley was then accepted into the psychology doctoral program at Akron University, where she worked for the university in the counseling department. Upon receiving her doctorate in psychology, Dr. Mitchell went into private practice in Cuyahoga Falls in 1976.
Shirley loved to spend time with her family, liked to read, enjoyed cooking, bird-watching, camping, exercising and tending to her garden. She continued to be professionally involved with presentations, publications and a variety of professional memberships.
Shirley leaves one son, John (Jane) Mitchell of Gates Mills; one daughter, Elaine Morlan of Poland; five grandchildren, Shane (Eric) Morlan, Scott (Heather) Morlan, Jacob (Amanda) Morlan, Dana Mitchell and Gianna Mitchell; and four great-grandchildren, Faith, Kyle, Brian and Oliver.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Anita Audino and Ella Schwartz.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the nursing staff and aides at the Inn at Poland Way, as well as Patriot Hospice Care, for their great care and kindness.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
