Mary L. Arkwright 1929-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Mary L. Arkwright, 96, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Washington, Pa., on Jan. 13, 1929, to William and Mary McCarthy Black, Mary was one of seven children.

She married her first husband, Alfred Seaman, with whom she had six children, and later settled in North Lima. Mary later married Scotty Arkwright and welcomed one more child into her life. Eventually, she made Youngstown her home.

A devoted and hardworking woman, Mary dedicated over 30 years as a nursing aide at Paisley House Assisted Living in Youngstown, retiring at the remarkable age of 85 in 2014. Her compassion and care touched countless lives during her time there.

Mary found joy in life’s simple pleasures — gardening in the summer, reading in the sun, shopping (especially during the holidays) and spending time with her family.

Known for her infectious laughter, she had a special way of lighting up any room she entered. Her home was a true reflection of her love for family, with cherished photographs adorning every wall and corner. Christmas was her favorite time of year. She would spend weeks decorating — more than she had room for, really. To her family, it felt like stepping into a winter wonderland, surrounded by gifts, delicious food and a kind of magic only she could create.

Mary is survived by five of her seven children, Nancy (Russell) Widders, Mary Christ, Peggy Seaman, William Seaman and Sherry VanDyke, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Betty McGary of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Richard Seaman and Alfred Seaman, as well as a grandson and son-in-law.

Mary will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the love, strength and warmth she brought into her family’s lives. She left an unforgettable mark on every heart she touched.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Mary has donated her body to Northeast Ohio Medical University.

A private memorial service will be held for her family at a later date.
