Joseph J. Sopkovich Jr. 1942-2025
STRUTHERS — Joseph J. Sopkovich Jr., 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025, after a brief illness.
He was born April 24, 1942, in Youngstown, son of the late Joseph J. Sr. and Katherine Zagorsky Sopkovich.
After graduating from Chaney High School in 1960, Joseph proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, receiving a Good Conduct Medal.
After an honorable discharge from the Army, he worked for various steel mills, including Youngstown Sheet & Tube. He retired from Indalex Aluminum in 2007, where he received USWA Journeyman Certification.
In retirement, he enjoyed swimming, gardening and fishing, and was a fan of Cleveland sports, as well as Ohio State and Youngstown State football. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. He will be remembered by loved ones for his warm smile and great sense of humor. Most importantly, Joseph will be remembered for all of the love and support he gave his family.
Joseph attended St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Youngstown.
A beloved husband and father, Joseph is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine Matijasic Sopkovich; his daughter, Valerie (Raymond) Wyant; two sons, Joseph J. Sopkovich III and Jon Sopkovich; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his sister, Katherine Sopkovich Pastor, and her husband, Gene Pastor.
Per his wishes, there are no calling hours or services planned.
The family would like to thank the staff at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers for its wonderful care and compassion, where they enabled Joseph to spend his final days with his wife.
