John S. Lautner 1936-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — John S. Lautner, 89, died peacefully at his home, Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2025, surrounded by his cherished family.

He was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Youngstown, the son of Michael and Mary Hoffer Lautner.

John was a 1955 graduate of Chaney High School. He enjoyed an impressive 44-year career as a railroad conductor, serving with both the Erie Railroad and Conrail before retiring.

In addition to his accomplished career, John had many interests that reflected his hands-on nature. In his spare time, he found joy in working on cars and doing body work. Among his proudest accomplishments was his beloved 1990 Corvette, a car that symbolized not only his love for automobiles but also a testament to his hard work.

He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Elizabeth Thomas, whom he married in 1956; children, Joni Kohut, Thomas Lautner and Kathy Lautner; five grandchildren, Michael Kohut, Jamie Kohut, Missy Posterli, Emily Lautner and Jessica Frances; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his brothers, Mitchell and Charles Lautner.
