James E. Mauch 1935-2025

AUSTINTOWN — James E. Mauch, 90, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 15, 1935, in Youngstown, a son of Louis J. and Laura F. Coy Mauch.

Jim was a 1953 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Youngstown, where he excelled in basketball and football. He received his bachelor’s degree from Youngstown College and a master’s degree from Kent State University.

He taught mathematics and coached athletics at West Farmington High School and Youngstown Wilson. He then worked for the IBM Corp. for six years in Kingston, New York, as a programmer / analyst and for four years in Akron as a systems engineer. He retired in 1997 after working for 20 years as a systems analyst for Thomas Steel Strip Corp. in Warren. After retiring, he volunteered his time at the EMF Outreach Center.

He married the former Helen “Eileen” Casey on May 3, 1963. Together, they shared 62 years of marriage and many wonderful memories. Eileen preceded Jim in death on July 21, 2025.

Jim was a man of faith and served in various offices at Woodland and Redeemer Lutheran churches, and as a lector and property committee member for Zion Lutheran Church.

He managed the Firemen’s Club in the Austintown Little League for 10 years and was an officer with the Youngstown Saxon Club for 23 years, serving three years as president. Jim was honored as the Saxon Club Man of the Year in 2005 and received the Alliance of Transylvania Saxons’ “Honor Pin” in 2011.

He enjoyed reading, puttering around the house, playing bocce in the Men’s Afternoon and Evening and Friday Night Couples Leagues at the Saxon Club, and many get-togethers with old friends from Wilson High School and Thomas Steel Strip. His greatest joy of all was spending time with his family, whom he dearly loved.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald J. (JoAnn) Mauch and Thomas Mauch, both of Austintown. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Trevor (Megan), Ed, Paige and Casey; a sister-in-law, Sheila Casey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, Jim was preceded in death by a son, Edward Allen Mauch; his parents; and four brothers, Bob, Jack, Dan and Ken Mauch.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church, 3300 Canfield Road, Youngstown, OH 44511 with Pastor Duane Jesse officiating.

Friends may call 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 25 at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim’s memory to Zion Lutheran Church or the Youngstown Saxon Club Memorial Funds.
