Henry G. Hassay Sr. 1934-2025

NORTH LIMA — Henry G. Hassay Sr., 91, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, at Aventura at Assumption Village, surrounded by his loving family.

Henry was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Youngstown, a son of the late John and Susan Hlafcak Hassay. He was a 1952 graduate of East High School.

A skilled and dedicated craftsman, Henry acted as the longtime president of Haselton Motors on Wilson Avenue, where he took great pride in his work and always stood by the automobiles he sold to customers.

Henry was a resident of Poland Township for more than 60 years. A former Vice Chairman of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, Henry took an active role in community and civic life. He served as the Regional Director for the First Catholic Slovak Union and later became Regional Director Emeritus. Henry also was court administrator for the late Judge John Leskovyansky and was a longtime member of St. Matthias Church, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish.

Indeed, Henry always freely offered a helping hand to friends and neighbors.

In retirement, Henry was an avid golfer who savored time spent on the course. He and his beloved wife, Betty, enjoyed escaping Ohio winters to relax at their home in Florida, where they especially cherished visits from family.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, the former Betty Jane Auld; their three children, Cynthia L. Hassay of Struthers, Henry G. (Jane) Hassay Jr. of Canfield, and Stacey H. (Dan) Clevenger of Rocky River; seven grandchildren, Jessica (Rob) Schlueter, Dylan (Sara) Jones, Alex Fidram Sr., H. Cole (Sophia) Hassay, Taylor (Adam Barnhizer) Hassay, Jamie Clevenger and Morgan Clevenger; and six great-grandchildren, Alex Fidram Jr., Ava Schlueter, Claire Schlueter, Layla Fidram, Max Jones and Jake Jones.

Henry’s family finds solace in that he has joined his parents in Heaven, meeting his father — who passed away before Henry’s birth — for the first time. He also rejoins his brothers, John, Paul, Stanley, Edward and Ted Hassay; his sister, Alice Dudik; and his brother-in-law and business partner, James Auld.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at St. Matthias Church, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, 915 Cornell St., Youngstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 5 p.m. Friday, at the church, with longtime friend of Henry’s, Monsignor Peter Polando, officiating.

Dinner will follow the service for all family and friends at the Becker Family Center, 8560 Market St., Boardman.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that material tributes take the form of contributions (in Henry’s name on memo line) payable to: Shriners Hospitals for Children, 1 Children’s Plaza 2 West, Dayton, OH 45404.

The Hassay family would like to thank the staff at Assumption Village for the three years of care and support that they gave Henry during his stay there.

Arrangements are being handled by Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman.
