Bernard L. Smolkovich 1952-2025
CANFIELD — Bernard Louis “Lou” Smolkovich, 73, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, at his residence.
Born May 31, 1952, in Youngstown, Lou was a son of the late Bernard Leonard and Anna Ruthora Mognet Smolkovich and was a lifelong area resident.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Lou served during the Vietnam War and earned the rank of SP5. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for trees, graduating from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in arboriculture.
For 35 years, Lou worked as a self-employed, certified arborist. His love for trees was more than a profession — it was a calling. He was deeply committed to staying informed about the latest in tree health, disease prevention and insect control, often attending classes and sharing his knowledge with others.
Lou was known not only for his expertise but also for his generosity and willingness to help friends and colleagues. His kind spirit and deep knowledge will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He leaves behind his fiancee, Linda Kurfis, whom he met on a blind date and with whom he shared many happy years; a nephew; several cousins; and many dear friends.
A celebration of life will be 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at Davidson’s Restaurant.
