John ‘Jack’ Yarnell 1926-2025

He lived a life rich in experiences, passions and relationships, making lasting contributions to both his family and community.

A proud veteran of the United States Army Band, Jack displayed an unwavering love for music throughout his life. He was a talented drummer and director, leading a five- and seven-piece group, The Jack Yarnell Band, which performed at various venues, including the iconic Idora Park. One of his proudest accomplishments was opening for legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Jack’s commitment to music extended beyond performance; he played an instrumental role in refurbishing the band shell at Salem Park, ensuring that future generations would enjoy the gift of live music.

Jack’s career was multifaceted. He worked as a buyer for Strouss-Hirshberg and several men’s clothing stores, including Rocco’s Men’s Clothing. Additionally, he worked for 10 years as an insurance salesman and served with dedication as a policeman with the Lowellville Police Department. This diverse professional journey exemplified his hardworking nature and his desire to serve his community.

In personal life, Jack had a special bond with his wife of 32 years, Polly Hilliard Yarnell. They met while he was making a deposit at the bank during his time at Rocco’s. Their connection blossomed into a loving partnership that flourished with the support of their family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Polly; daughters, Lisa (Brad) Shattuck and Lisa (Rod) Thorn; and sons, John Yarnell and Ted (Julie) Schuster. Also to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Mason (Angela) Shattuck, John Yarnell, Gustav Schuster, Tyler and Bailee Thorn.

Jack was a socializing spirit who never met a stranger. He found joy in conversations and memories shared with friends. He was particularly fond of his regular spot at Heggy’s, where he enjoyed gathering with friends at the round table, where he had his own special seat. Additionally, he was a proud member of the Salem Italian American Club, further enriching his ties within the community. Jack enjoyed his time on the golf course and visiting his friends at Giant Eagle daily.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank. and sister, Rosemary, both of whom he cherished deeply.

A celebration of life in honor of Jack Yarnell will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept.14, 2025, at the Salem Italian American Club, 250 Penn Ave, Salem, OH 44460.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Jack’s honor to the Salem Community Foundation: Summer Concerts, P.O. Box 553, Salem, OH 44460.

Jack’s legacy as a devoted musician, a committed public servant and a loving family man will continue to resonate within the lives of those who knew him. As we reflect on his life, let us remember a man who brought joy, music and positivity into our world.
