Thomas J. Roberts 1963-2025

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Thomas J. Roberts, 62, passed away unexpectedly, early Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025, at his residence.

Tom was born March 2, 1963, in Youngstown, the youngest son of Lawrence and Barbara Mszanski Roberts.

He was a 1981 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a member of the 1980 All-City Series football team. Tom went on to play college football at the University of Mount Union and ultimately graduated from Youngstown State University with a degree in finance.

Tom was a distinguished real estate appraiser and one of the former vice presidents of First Place Bank, where he worked for over 20 years. He was also a joint owner and operator of Big’s Sports Bar on Mahoning Avenue, which combined his passion for good food, fellowship and football.

Tom was deeply rooted in his community and faith. He served as a member of the Poland Rotary Club and participated in the annual Men’s Renewal at St. Christine Parish. In addition, Tom was a proud coach for Woodrow Wilson, Lowellville and St. Thomas Aquinas high school football teams, where he mentored young athletes and shared his love for the game.

Tom always enjoyed being outdoors. He spent many summers at the family cottage in Lake Milton, and other days walking along the trails or golfing at Mill Creek Park. Though when fall came around, you would find him hunting at his cabin in Rogers or sitting around the fire with a glass of Campobasso and Wild Turkey 101.

He kept traditions with family and friends — often involving food like smoked kielbasa, roasted lamb and Angelo’s Pizza.

Tom will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and loving presence.

He is survived by his wife, Melanie Roberts of Port Charlotte, Florida; brother, Larry (Nancy) Roberts of Poland; and daughter, Katherine (Shawn) Roberts of Pittsburgh, Pa. Tom’s memory will be cherished by his nieces, nephew, extended family and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Barbara Roberts, and followed shortly thereafter by the passing of his brother, Michael (Marie) Roberts, on Aug. 1, 2025.

A Mass was held in his honor at St. Christine Parish on July 17, 2025.

His remains will be laid to rest in Youngstown at a future date.
