Robert Butler 1941-2025
YOUNGSTOWN — Robert E. Butler, 84, passed away peacefully, Monday morning, Aug. 11, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Born in Canton, Bob was the son of the late Randall and Leora Hathaway Butler. He graduated from North Canton Hoover High School in 1959 and proudly served in the United States Navy.
After returning home from service, Bob worked at a Green Stamp store, where he met the love of his life, Carol A. Sells. They were married May 29, 1965, in Canton, and moved to the Austintown area the following year to begin their life together.
Throughout his life, Bob held many roles. He spent more than 30 years as a retail department manager, later co-owned and operated ResComm Cleaning with his son-in-law, Dave, and worked at Millcreek Children’s Center for Sister Mary Dunn. He continued working well into his 70s, retiring at the age of 76.
Bob lived life to the fullest. He loved spending time with family and friends — whether playing cards, caring for his yard and home or enjoying music. He loved jazz music, especially the songs of Neil Diamond and Chris Botti. A loyal sports fan, Bob rooted for all the Cleveland teams — the Browns, Indians and Cavaliers — and was a true Notre Dame fan, especially cheering for the women’s basketball team.
Bob, known to all as Poppy, will be remembered most for his generosity, deep love for his family and genuine care for others. His strong work ethic was a defining characteristic of who he was and a value he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
His beloved wife, Carol, passed away April 4, 2022.
Cherishing his memory are his sister, Dorrie VanNeste; his children, Lori (Dave) Paull, Donald (Jodi) Butler and Julie (Michael) Villano; and his grandchildren, Matthew (Kara) Paull, Michael (Shanna) Butler, Renee (Billy) Goben, Zachary (Julia) Butler, Jacob (Vanessa) Butler, Samantha Butler, Jack Villano and Aren Villano. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Logan, Peyton, Elijah, Bella, Kora Ann, JJ, Giani, Lucia, Isaac and Lizzy; along with one great-great-grandchild, Braxton.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Catcott.
Family and friends may call noon to 1:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.
