Nancy R. Nelson 1935-2025

AUSTINTOWN — Nancy Rae Soverns Nelson, 90, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born in Dickerson Run, Fayette County, Pa., she was a daughter of the late George and Bertha Soverns, and married the love of her life, Charles W. Nelson, on June 11, 1955.
She was a member of Austintown Community Church, where she volunteered for years to cook and serve in the church restaurant at the Canfield Fair, whose proceeds are primarily used to support local operations. Spending time with her family and loved ones was always most important to her and often involved cooking, camping, fishing or playing cards.
Nancy was the loving mother of Charles W. Nelson Jr. of Hartville, David Nelson of Austintown and Linda Nelson of Monroe, Michigan. She is also survived by beloved grandchildren, Amber, Michael (Amanda), Matthew and Raymond; as well as her great-grandchildren Hayden, Kaelyn and Noah.
Nancy was always dedicated to the children of our community. She taught Sunday school, volunteered in the schools and worked with and organized many Girl Scout troops over the years. She also assisted Boy Scouts with special projects such as making apple butter over a fire and fishing derbies. Later in life, she became an avid fan of youth hockey and the Phantoms Hockey program in Youngstown, as well as youth robotics programs, as she dove into supporting her grandchildren.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; son, Richard Lynn; and siblings, Annabell, Alverda, James, Bertha, Ruth, Betty, Frank, Harry John, George and Harry J.
She will be celebrated 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, and 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025, at Lane Funeral Home in Austintown, with a service at noon.
