She grew up in Youngstown. Debbie, as she liked to be called, attended Ursuline High School and worked primarily at the Hills Department Store in Youngstown.
Debbie married Mike Cancio on Dec. 6, 1980. The couple moved to the Northern Virginia area in 1985.
She was a devoted mother to Dina Gonzalez (husband, Lex), Michael Jr. (wife, Daisy Zuniga) and Jenna Cancio; and a cherished grandmother to David, Alexis, Ariana, Adrian, Jaylin, Gabriel, Grayson and Ivan.
Debbie worked for the United States Postal Service and retired in 2018, where she acquired many cherished friends. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family, with many memorable trips to East Coast beaches. Debbie found joy in preparing meals and finding loving gifts to celebrate seasons, birthdays and anniversaries. Her lasagna and pasta salad were family favorites. When time and health allowed, Debbie liked to travel back to Ohio to visit friends and family.
In her final days, Debbie found solace in reviewing old photos and reminiscing with family members and friends.
There will be memorials in Ohio and in Virginia.
The memorial / celebration of life in Ohio will be 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center, 4500 Norquest Blvd., Austintown, OH 44515.
