Phyllis Caruso 1949-2025
CAMPBELL — Phyllis Caruso, 75, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital.
She was born Aug. 18, 1949, in Youngstown, the daughter of James and Pauline Scarsella Renaldy.
Phyllis dedicated her life to education and the service of others. She worked as a teacher for the Youngstown City Schools for over 30 years, a career that brought her immense joy and fulfillment. Phyllis was deeply passionate about her students, whom she loved dearly, and her influence extended far beyond the classroom.
Phyllis was a graduate of Ursuline High School and later earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University.
Her commitment to lifelong learning was evident not only in her career but also in her active involvement in her community. She generously volunteered her time at the Dorothy Day House, where her giving nature shone brightly. A talent in the kitchen, Phyllis was known for her incredible cooking skills, further endearing her to family and friends.
She leaves behind cherished cousins, including Janet Scarsella of Boardman and her family; Joseph (Danitra) Scarsella, and their daughter, Talia, of Boardman; and Anthony J. Scarsella of Denver, Colorado.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alex Caruso; and her cousin, William Scarsella.
Family and friends may call 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home-Poland Chapel, 2726 Center Road, Youngstown, OH 44514, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Church.
The family requests that material tributes take the form of donations to the Dorothy Day House in Phyllis’ honor.
