Helen M. Underhill 1929-2025

NORTH JACKSON — Helen M. Underhill, born May 18, 1929, in Youngstown, to German immigrants Ernst and Luise Weber, and a lifelong area resident, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Antonine Village.

She graduated from Chaney High School in 1947 and attended Heidelberg University, where she met her future husband, Harvey T. Underhill Jr., whom she married in 1949.

Her first employment was with General Motors Acceptance Corp. While raising two adopted children, she was a homemaker and volunteered at her church, Chaney School and at local hospitals. She was employed at Protestant Family Service and was later a secretary for the Organization of Protestant Men in the chaplains’ office at several local hospitals. Helen served as a volunteer secretary at North Side Hospital for 35 years until the hospital closed.

Helen was a lifelong member of Pilgrim Collegiate Church, which later merged with Faith Community Covenant Church, now merged with First Covenant Church. She was a member of the Luhman Guild, women’s fellowship, the choir and served as a financial secretary for 25 years. For many years, she bowled with the Christian Women’s Bowling League.

Helen is survived by her son, Ted (Loretta) Underhill; four grandchildren, Julie Weaver of Canal Fulton, Adam Underhill of Medina, Zachary (Kristin) Underhill of Austintown and Justin Kirtos of Akron; and seven great-grandchildren, Emma and Claire Weaver, Sophia and Connor Underhill, and Dailyn, Jeremy and Devyn Underhill.

In addition to her parents and husband, who passed away in 2002, Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy L. Kirtos.

The family would like to thank Antonine Village and Mercy Hospice of the Valley.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Helen’s honor to the First Covenant Church (5210 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown OH 44512) and Youngstown Shrine Club (1735 W. South Range Road, North Lima, OH 44452).

A memorial service will take place at a later date.
