Peter Gabriel 1947-2025

MINERAL RIDGE — Peter Gabriel, 78, passed away Friday, June 13, 2025, peacefully in his sleep, just six weeks after the passing of his beloved wife of 55 years, Julia Roberts Gabriel. Their love story was one of deep devotion, and now they are reunited once more.

Born June 10, 1947, in Sharon, Pa., Peter was the eldest of three children of Peter A. and Anna Malenky Gabriel.

As a young man, he was an avid athlete, playing Little League baseball and high school football until multiple concussions during his sophomore year led him to step away from the game. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1965.

Peter was a hard worker and dedicated student, working his way through college with jobs at a service station and Westinghouse. He earned his teaching degree from Slippery Rock University and later went on to achieve a master’s degree, plus an additional 45 hours of continuing education.

His teaching career began in Hubbard, where he also met the love of his life, Julia. They were married Aug. 1, 1970. Peter later joined Girard High School, where he taught history for 35 years, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and colleagues.

Beyond the classroom, he was a committed coach — coaching football, girls’ basketball, softball and volleyball teams — and he also taught summer school. He served as president of the teachers’ union, advocating for his peers with passion and integrity.

A devout Christian, Peter was a member of First Baptist Church in Niles. His faith, family and community were the cornerstones of his life.

He cherished time with his grandchildren, especially taking them fishing and attending family gatherings.

To Peter, nothing mattered more than being present for those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dennis A. Gabriel; and his cherished wife, Julia.

Peter leaves behind his two sons, Peter (Amy) Gabriel and Joseph (Terese) Gabriel, both of Austintown; four beloved grandchildren, Danielle, Jocelyn, Peter Jr. and Alyssa Gabriel; his brother, Mark (Janelle) Gabriel of Brookfield; Liz and Brian Sherfller of Sharon; one grandson-in-law to be, Phillip Beohm (Danielle); along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Peter will be remembered for his generosity, warmth and unwavering love for his family and students. His legacy lives on in all the lives he touched.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2025, at Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel, 1350 N. Canfield Niles Road, Mineral Ridge, OH 44440. A funeral service will follow immediately at 11 a.m.
