Marjorie A. Hunkus 1934-2025

GIRARD — Marjorie A. Hunkus, 90, passed away peacefully, Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Liberty Health Care.

She was born June 20, 1934, in Girard, the daughter of Ralph and Margaret Williams Brock.

She worked for Youngstown Sheet & Tube, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Austintown Ambulatory Outpatient Surgical Center.

Her life was fully devoted to Jesus, being a loving wife to Richard, a mother to her five sons and granddaughter, a grandmother and great-grandmother.

Marjorie was a member of First Christian Assembly in Liberty Township. She enjoyed fellowship at her church and was active with Bible studies and volunteering at the local food bank. She also loved reading, watching movies on the Hallmark Channel and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Guardians.

Marjorie was known to all to love the Lord. Her devotion and prayer life was a testament to her nickname, “Prayer Warrior.” A poem written by an unknown author reminds those who knew her of Marjorie’s unceasing prayer life:

“Let my hands, though wrinkled, rise in praise,

Like Moses’ arms through weary days (Exodus 17:12)

Let my voice not fade, but echo strong,

With worship that has lasted long.

Let my children see that storms may come,

But peace is found where prayers are sung.

Let my grandchildren walk these worn floor creaks,

Knowing Grandma’s God still speaks.”

The family would like to thank the health care providers and countless staff involved in Marjorie’s care during days spent at home, at St. Elizabeth’s (Youngstown) Hospital and the Liberty Health Care Center. A special thanks goes to her physical therapy team — Jimmy, Agata and Kimberly — for its hard work.

Left to cherish Marjorie’s memory are her sons, Richard (Catherine) Hunkus of Vonore, Tennessee, Ronald Hunkus of Liberty Township, David (Holly) Hunkus of Girard, Robert (Colleen) Hunkus of Girard and Michael Hunkus of Girard; granddaughter, Lauren Hunkus of Girard; brother, Robert Brock of New Jersey; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hunkus, whom she married June 19, 1955, and died Jan. 22, 1988; brother, Dr. Ralph Brock; and daughter-in-law, Deborah Hunkus.

Funeral services will be noon Friday, June 6, 2025, at Blackstone Funeral Home, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Marjorie will be laid to rest at Crown Hill Cemetery, Vienna, next to her husband.

The family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the church memorial fund or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Marjorie’s memory.
