Roberta L. Grossen 1947-2025

SALEM — Roberta L. Grossen, 77, left this world Thursday, May 15, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family. Though she is no longer with us in body, her spirit — gentle, steadfast and endlessly giving — remains a guiding force for all who were blessed to know her.

Born Nov. 6, 1947, in Salem, Bobbi was the cherished daughter of Wilbur and Betty Burkle Spanabel. She carried their values forward — kindness, humility and quiet strength — through every chapter of her life.

A proud graduate of Columbiana High School in 1965 and Trumbull Memorial School of Nursing in 1968, Bobbi answered a lifelong calling to care for others. She dedicated many years to her career as a registered nurse, working at Union Hospital in Dover and Salem Regional Medical Center in Salem. She also served as an EMT with the Quad Ambulance District for 22 years in Waynesburg, offering not just medical expertise but also deep compassion, warmth and calm in moments of fear and uncertainty.

Yet Bobbi’s greatest role wasn’t defined by a title or uniform — it was found in the relationships she nurtured. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, John, for more than five decades, and a fiercely loving mother to her children, including her daughter Janene, whom she now joins in peace. As a sister, she was a source of strength through both laughter and loss. As a friend, she was a loyal, kind, and comforting presence — always ready with a smile and a hug. Her legacy lives on in her son, Jay, daughter-in-law, Liz, and grandson, Hudson, who brought her endless joy and pride.

To be loved by Bobbi was to be seen, cared for and held with the kind of attention that makes ordinary moments feel sacred. Her life was a testimony to the power of compassion and the grace of selfless love.

Bobbi was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Janene, who passed away Jan. 5, 1999; and sisters, Jeanette Schmidt, Gail Loveland, Kathy Young and Carole Crouse.

She is survived by her husband, John Grossen; son, John (Elizabeth Humphreys) Grossen II; grandson, Hudson Alexander Humphreys Grossen; and sister, Donna Sammons.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana.

Friends and family are welcome to gather for calling hours beginning at 4 p.m., to share memories and celebrate the extraordinary heart that was Bobbi’s.

In lieu of flowers, please honor Bobbi’s memory with a simple act of care for someone in need — just as she would have done.
