Joseph P. Nuzzo 1955-2025

GIRARD — Joseph P. Nuzzo, 70, passed away Friday morning, May 2, 2025.
Joe was born Jan. 20, 1955, in Youngstown, the son of the late Sam and Elizabeth Nuzzo.
He was a 1972 graduate of East High School. Joe earned his bachelor’s degree in 1991 and his master’s degree in 1998, both from Youngstown State University. He taught in the math department at Youngstown State University and at ETI in Niles.
Joe was an avid keno player and golfer, recording a hole-in-one. He played in the Mount Carmel Bocce League and the Arco Club Bocce League, where he was named MVP. Joe also was an outstanding bowler. On March 29, 1976, he was accepted into the Professional Bowlers Association. At the age of 13, Joe had a bowling average of over 200, and every year since. His highest average of 242 came in 2006-2007. He has bowled well over 100 perfect games, with his most recent only three weeks ago. He also has many 800 series with a high set of 858 in 2011.
Joe participated in many bowling tournaments over the years. He has been a multiple champion in many tournaments, such as the BPAA Eliminations, the Greater Pittsburgh Open, Nesbit’s Tournament in Pittsburgh, Youngstown Masters, Youngstown Senior Masters and Ohio Masters. In the Youngstown City Tournament, he has been champion with 15 team titles, three doubles, five singles, one mixed doubles and three all-events champion. At the Ohio State Tournament, he was champion on the 1986 team, the 1996 doubles and 1996 all events. Joe also was the 2019 PBA Senior Doubles Champion at the regional tournament in Canton with Danny Guerrieri, and the 1990 U.S. Open Qualifier Champion in Toledo. In 1978, he was runner-up at the ABC National Doubles in St. Louis with Ernie Schlegel.
Joe will be remembered lovingly by his wife, JoAnn Giampetro Nuzzo, whom he married May 27, 1978; sister-in-law, Jean (Vince) Julian; nephew, Thomas (Molly) Julian; niece, Celeste Julian; and many cousins and friends whom he dearly loved.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his in-laws, Thomas and Grace Giampetro.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 via Mount Carmel in Youngstown, with Monsignor Michael Cariglio celebrating the Mass.
There are no calling hours.
