Carl R. Racketa 1932-2025

GIRARD – Carl Robert “Rack” Racketa Sr., 92, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 10, 2025, surrounded by family.
Carl lived a life marked by love, service and athletic excellence.
He was born Nov. 12, 1932, in Sharon, Pa., a son of Samuel and Mary Racketa. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1951, then attended Ohio University for two years.
A proud U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.
After a long and dedicated career, Carl retired from RMI Titanium in 1995.
Carl married the love of his life, Clara, on Oct. 6, 1956. They were married for 66 years before her passing in 2022.
An accomplished athlete, Carl starred in basketball and baseball at Sharon High School, where he earned All-State Honorable Mention and First Team honors in Section III. He went on to play college basketball at Ohio University, standing out for two years on the court. Carl was later recognized for his exceptional achievements with inductions into several athletic halls of fame, including the Curbstone Coaches and Mercer County Hall of Fame. He was also considered one of the finest fast-pitch softball players to come out of the Shenango Valley.
During his time in the Army, Carl showcased his athletic talents playing softball for the 135th Engineer Battalion from 1954 to 1955. He later competed in the Youngstown Oldtimers Fast-Pitch League and was a proud member of the Buhl Club Whiz Kids — a renowned local youth team.
Known affectionately as “Rack” by friends and family, he will be remembered for his quiet strength, deep love for his family and lifelong passion for sport.
He is survived by his children, Samuel (Regina) Racketa, Carl (Christine) Racketa Jr. and Marylynn Racketa; and his grandchildren, Ryan (Jacklyn) Racketa and Nicholas Racketa.
