Betty Ostovich 1930-2025

STRUTHERS — Betty Ostovich passed away Friday, May 16, 2025.

Betty was born on March 2, 1930, in Salem, to Sophie and John Weber. She was the youngest of 12. As her parents passed away when she was young, Betty was raised by her siblings (six brothers and five sisters).

She met her polka partner and love of her life, Vern, on the dance floor of Point View Dance Hall. Betty and Vern were married on Sept. 17, 1955, and started their family in the home Vern built in Struthers.

Betty was very artistic. She was an active member of the Women’s Garden Club, where she received many awards for her modern artistic floral arrangements. Floral designs were always on display at her home, in her gardens, door hangings and table settings. Her son, Eric, made sure she had flowers to tend to in her elder years. Betty also enjoyed working with ceramics. Everyone in the family has one of Betty’s creations to cherish.

The most important life lesson to learn from Betty is, do it all. She would say, “Go do it now, while you still can.” She loved to travel and stayed continually active. Early on, the family began spending nearly every summer weekend camping, fishing and often going to the Carolina beaches. Although she didn’t fish, Betty loved sitting at the bow of the boat with her sunhat on laughing at Vern when all kids had a fish on the line at the same time.

Betty loved hosting parties and dinners at her home, neighborhood card clubs, sharing her famous strawberry pie, and participating at community events through both the Struthers Business Association and Poland United Methodist Church.

Giving was Betty’s way of saying, I love you. She was first to bring dinner to a neighbor in need and when working on a craft, she would make extras to share with others to brighten their days.

As Vern preceded Betty in death, Betty’s last year was spent at The Inn at Poland Way. She continued her active ways at the facility, dancing, hosting dinners with friends, motivating the residents to go on outings, play bingo, make crafts and exercise.

Betty is once again dancing with her husband and polka partner, Vern.

Betty will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her children, Cynthia (Jeffrey) Semach of Rowlett, Texas, Karen (Nick) Visingardi of Poland, Eric (Dawn) Ostovich of Edinburg, Pa., and Jean (Bruce) Truxall of Hillard; grandchildren, Alexis, Jesse, Bryan, Jeana, Jared and Justin; and great-grandsons Beau, Brooks and Gannon.

Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, followed immediately by a funeral service beginning at 12:30 p.m., celebrated by Pastor Paul Turner.

She will then be laid to rest with her husband in Poland Riverside Cemetery.

A heartfelt thank you to Dave for being her Wednesday morning breakfast buddy. And to Lisa, Kim, Cindy, Betty, Erin, Mercadezz and the staff at The Inn at Poland Way, for all the love and care they gave Betty over the last three years.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. Please visit www.beckerobits.com to send the family condolences and share your memories.
