GIRARD — Ross J. Mortellaro, 56, of Girard, passed away Friday, April 25, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of courage, honor and devotion to family and country.

Born April 2, 1969, in Youngstown, Ross was the son of Richard and Frances DePinto Mortellaro. He graduated from McDonald High School in McDonald in 1988, and went on to serve his country with distinction.

Ross served in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army from 1988 to 1998. His assignments took him to Panama; Okinawa, Japan; Pirinclik, Turkey; Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton; and Fort Drum in New York — each post reflecting his commitment and patriotism.

A proud veteran and patriot, Ross was an active member of the Girard American Legion in Girard, serving as commander from 2023 to 2024. His leadership was defined by integrity, compassion, and deep respect for his fellow service members.

Outside of military life, Ross earned a sixth-degree black belt in karate and had a passion for genealogy, dedicating countless hours to tracing his family history.

He is survived by his mother, Frances Mortellaro of McDonald; his brothers, Richard D. Mortellaro of McDonald and Mark (Ginger) Mortellaro of Clarksburg, Maryland; his sister, Christine (John) Price of McDonald; and his beloved nieces and nephews: William, Adam, Nathan and Avary Price, and Kathern and Dominic Mortellaro.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard J. Mortellaro, who undoubtedly welcomed him home with pride.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, followed by a memorial service.

He will be laid to rest privately in Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
