Joseph J. Melfi 1939-2025

GIRARD — Joseph Melfi, known to many as “The Mayor,” passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 22, 2025, with his children by his side, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service and love for his community and family.

Born on Sept. 27, 1939, Joe was the son of the late James and Rose Melfi and a lifelong resident of Girard.

He began his education at Saint Rose School and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1957. Shortly after, he served his country in the U.S. Army, spending two years stationed in Europe and four additional years in the active reserves.

Joe worked at U.S. Steel until the closure of the steel mills, which marked a new chapter in his life — one of public service and civic leadership. He served as a Girard City Councilman for eight years, including four years as Council President. In 1980, he was elected Mayor of Girard, a position he proudly held for eight years. Joe took immense pride in serving the people of his hometown. Among his many accomplishments, he helped bring Girard its first franchise restaurant, Burger King, and played a key role in developing the bocce courts and baseball fields at Tod Park — spaces that continue to bring joy to families today.

After his time as mayor, Joe continued serving the public for another two decades, working 10 years as an administrator for the Trumbull County Treasurer’s Office and an additional 10 years in the Auditor’s Office.

Joe lived a full and meaningful life. He enjoyed his daily walks, discussing sports and politics, playing bocce and cards, visiting the casino, cooking and loved celebrating his Italian heritage with the Feast of the Seven Fishes each Christmas Eve. Anyone who was close to Joe knew he especially enjoyed relaxing with a good cigar. But above all, Joe loved his family and all people. He found purpose in helping others and building connections within his community.

He leaves behind his loving children, Joseph M. Melfi (fiancee Racheal Solida), and Tali and Jeremy Williams. He also leaves behind his pride and joys — his beloved grandchildren, Dr. Kada Fehlman (Dr. Jared Fehlman) and Kai Williams. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Nick Melfi (Barbara Melfi); his nephew and niece; and many extended family members and lifelong friends whom he deeply cherished.

Joe now joins his beloved wife, Stacy, in eternal rest. He missed her every day and now they are back together again.

Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home in Girard.

Joe will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. True to his word, he always said, “I love people and helping people.” And he truly did.
