He moved to Orangeville in 1942, then Warren in 1964, eventually settling in Vienna in 1987. Herm graduated from Vernon High School then went on to earn an education degree in science from Kent State University and his master’s degree in education / counseling from Westminster College in Pennsylvania. Herm played varsity basketball, baseball and track while in high school. He enjoyed sports as a participant and as a spectator later in his adult life. His love of nature led him to join the Boy Scouts, where he learned camping, canoeing, hunting and fishing as a youth. He enjoyed many family fishing vacations in Canada. Canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, golfing, tennis, camping and woodworking were activities Herm enjoyed as an adult. His proudest moments include the birth of his sons, Kevin and Craig; being the first in his family to receive undergraduate and graduate degrees; teaching seventh, eighth and ninth grade science at East Junior High School in Warren; helping with the construction of his passive solar home; and establishing a private practice in counseling.
