Ellwood J. ‘Ted’ Filmer 1940-2025

CANFIELD — Ellwood J. “Ted” Filmer, 84, passed away unexpectedly, Monday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2025, at Briarfield at Ashley Circle in Austintown.
Ted was born Nov. 25, 1940, in Youngstown, a son of the late Alfred “Jack” and Marjorie E. Harrar Filmer, and was a lifelong resident of Canfield.
Ted graduated from Canfield High School in 1958, attended Youngstown State University and worked as a buyer for Ajax Magnethermic for 32 years, retiring in 1993. In 1976, he began working part-time for Lane Ambulance and Lane Funeral Home, eventually becoming a full-time employee in 1993.
Over the years, Ted held various positions, from funeral associate to maintenance, until his retirement in 2017. A dedicated member of his community, Ted was an active member of Western Reserve United Methodist Church, where he volunteered for their chicken dinners. He was committed to serving others and made a lasting impact through his volunteer work. Ted was also a long-time member of the Lions Club of Canfield, where he served as past governor, past president and past secretary, and contributed on the district cabinet for many years. He was a member of their Pilot Dogs Seeing Eye Dog Program and was the last surviving charter member of the Canfield Lions Club. For his service, Ted was honored with the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.
He was the founding member of the Western Reserve Amateur Radio Club. Additionally, he served as a member of the Canfield Fire Department for 25 years and was part of the Canfield Police Auxiliary for 35 years.
Ted is survived by his daughter, Jodi (Ron) Weaver of Ellsworth; his son, Tod Filmer of Canfield; his two grandchildren, Jordan and Andrew; and his former wife, Jane Filmer. He also leaves behind his brother, Richard Filmer of New York; and his sister, Judy Lewis of Delaware, Ohio.
Besides his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his brother, David.
Friends may call 5 to 6:45 p.m. Monday at Lane Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel, where the Lions Club will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, where friends may call 10 until 10:45 a.m.
