Edith Checkel 1945-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Edith “Edie” Checkel, 79, gently passed away surrounded by her family, Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025.
She was born Oct. 12, 1945, to her loving parents, Edith and Earl Banfield, in Youngstown.
She was a 1963 graduate of South High School.
In 1972, she married John “Jack” Checkel. During their marriage of almost 53 years, they had a son, Jason Checkel, whom they cherished deeply.
Edie was a proud 1963 graduate of South High School and gave 20 dedicated years to Robbin’s Furniture store in Youngstown. Most recently, she brought warmth and laughter to the Pastime Bar on South Avenue as a bartender, retiring in 2021. She was proudly known as “Edie from the Pastime.”
Edie’s passion for baking was legendary, especially during Christmas, when she shared the love with family and friends. The thrill of the casino, scratch-off tickets and Keno were also beloved pastimes. Her warm smile and kind heart will forever be etched into the memories of all who had the privilege to know her.
Edie was a longtime active member of John Knox Presbyterian Church and most recently attended Canfield Presbyterian Church.
Left to treasure her memories, besides her husband and son, are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss her dearly.
Besides her parents, Edie was preceded in death by her siblings, Earl Banfield and Jo-Ann Banfield Ammon; and brother-in-law, Joseph Ammon.
The family will receive friends and family 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., Canfield, OH 44406, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m.
