Ronald Basciano 1941-2025

YOUNGSTOWN — Ronald “Rocky” Basciano, 83, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, at his home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Rocky was born Aug. 21, 1941, in Youngstown, to the late Dominic Basciano and Sandella Liguore Basciano. He attended Derry High School in Derry, Pa., and served in the Navy on the USS Lexington.

He returned to Youngstown to attend Youngstown College and work for US Steel at the Brier Hill plant when he met his beautiful wife, Shirley Ann Saykes Basciano. The union was blessed with three children, Carey Basciano of Hilton Head, South Carolina (wife, Shelby Sharp Basciano, and their three daughters, Zoey, Sydney and Piper), Brian Basciano of Howland (wife, Melissa Myers Basciano) and Nicole Basciano of Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Rocky was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, Nov. 2, 2016.

Rocky worked at the General Motors Lordstown plant for 30 years. He was a member of St. Rose Church in Girard. He built his family’s home in Austintown.

He loved spending time in his shed doing woodwork and going to his cabin on the Clarion River in Pennsylvania.

After Shirley’s passing, Rocky moved to Hilton Head to live with his daughter, Nicole. His last eight years were spent adoring his three granddaughters, working on woodworking projects and enjoying the warm South Carolina sun.

Rocky’s life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children, Carey, Brian and Nicole; surviving sisters, Donna Bobeck, Rosemarie Parisi and Sandra Basciano, all of Girard; in-laws, the Saykes and Cummings families; and his extended family in Hinesville, Georgia, Courtney, Victor, Scarlett and Grayson.

There will be a celebration of Life for Rocky, 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, at Avalon Gardens in Youngstown. All friends and family of Rocky’s are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry can be made in his name at https://mirasolhealth.org/donate/.
